THE JOURNEY TO OUR BAR
Our dream really began when we embarked on a journey around the world, talking about our future and our ideas while we wandered Vineyards in Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia.
Our love of wine only grew and we hoped one day we would achieve some of the daydreams we shared during those hazy sunny days.
In November 2013 we opened our doors to our first wine bar in Woking, Surrey, our dream had become reality.
We wanted to share our love and appreciation of good wines, help people learn and discover new and exciting wines and share our 'obession' with Aperitif, charcuterie and cheese! Cellar Magneval was born.
We created a bar that reflected us, warm, intimate and full of our family belongings, even Thierry's Mum's old desk! It made the space very personal and welcoming, we hoped people would grow to love it.
We were anxious, as any entrepeuneur will know the giant leaps are not easy but we didn't need to fear. Woking welcomed us with open arms and we have gone from strength to strength.
So much that Cellar Magneval No.2 opened its doors almost exactly one year later. This time in Fleet, Hampshire.
We wanted to make this bar feel as independant as Woking even though it has the same name above its doors.
We brought in the wonderful Made in Place again and between created a quirky and interesting venue, which certainly gets people talking!
Both bars are thriving, word is still spreading and we are still loving what we do.
It has been a crazy few years but one we don't regret. People say to us regularly that we have created something special. That they find it special. They come back again and again and for that we are so thankful. Our gamble paid off and we will work hard to ensure that it stays that way.
Thierry de Magneval
Chef Sommelier/ Patron
After working for over 14 years within the catering industry, Thierry has had the pleasure of working alongside the likes of Albert Roux (Brasserie Roux Heathrow T5 & Roux at Parliment Square), Herbert Berger (1 Lombard Street), Michel Roux Jr (Le Gavroche & Roux at Parliment Square) and most recently Pierre Koffmann at The Berkeley Hotel.
His love of wine, food and high class service is what he is passionate about and sharing this with his customers is what makes him tick.
Since opening the bars he has been able to put all his Michelin Starred and fine dining experience in to a more relaxed atmosphere.
From hand selecting and supplying wines for other local businesses and gaining experience in blending wines for the bars himself, to serving at initimate private functions he is getting the best of both worlds.
Wine consulting for other businesses is now at the forefront of Thierrys ambition as well as beginning to import wines for the business himself.
"I dream of travelling the world and discovering unfound wine treasures, having 3 outlets enables this dream to become a reality and I can't wait to get started!"
Jo de Magneval
Jo's love of wine has developed since meeting Thierry and she firmly believes you don't have to be an expert (or rich!) to enjoy fine wine.
"For me wine used to be intimidating and a bit of a mystery, but what I have found is that it doesn't need to be. It's all about discovering what works you and that's what we are here to help with."
After working in Media for many years Jo started running Cellar Magneval as an online wine supplier three years ago and has gained her level 1 & 2 in WSET Wine.
Since opening she has discovered a passion for hosting events and marketing that she did not know was there!
Her love of design and being creative is now also a part of her day and she looks forward to what the next project will be...
Jo and Thierry adore their two young daughters and live in Woking, travelling and discovering as often as they can.
